Standard
Two UNI standards 10389-2 and 11859-1 for biomass plants
The UNI 10389-2 standard for combustion analysis, draft, and fuel moisture was published in April 2022, offering new prospects to the market because it is finally possible to distinguish clean combustion plants from polluting ones, which need to be corrected or replaced.
The analysis of dust has not yet been included, so installers and maintainers of thermal power plants will still have to perform dust checks based on their own experience, manufacturers' instructions, or rely on chemical laboratories.
The UNI 11859-1 standard indicates to the installer and maintainer the methods for inspections on existing flue systems, equivalent to UNI 10845 for gas.
Before installation, the installer must ensure the suitability of the chimney, for example using the new UNI 11859-1 standard:
• Check for any unobstructed ventilation openings
• General check of the chimney:
• Check of the seal test certified by the chimney installer
• Check of the safety distance certified by the chimney installer
• Visual inspection: • Materials used and compatibility with the installation site
• Criteria for laying smoke ducts, chimney, and any collector
• Chimney pots and outlet heights
• Condition of internal and external preservation (e.g., through video inspection with a rotating head camera compliant with UNI 10847)
For chimneys without checks, certifications, and chimney plates, the installer will certify them.
Checks after installation or maintenance
After the installation of the generator and at each maintenance, the combustion of the generator must be checked and adjusted to avoid pollution, and the checks on manually loaded domestic generators such as fireplaces, stoves, or wood inserts include:
• Inspection of the quality of the wood with type, weight, size according to the manufacturer's instructions
• Moisture content of the fuel according to UNI 10389-2
• Measurement of draft UNI 10389-2 • Measurement of flue gas temperature
• Verification of adequate supply of combustion air, e.g., through the 4-Pa-test
• Verification of smoke backflow UNI 11859-1
• Verification of coaxial exhaust seal UNI 11859-1
