Technical Standards: New UNI 10389-2 and UNI 11859-1

📘 Two UNI Standards 10389-2 and 11859-1 for Biomass Systems

The UNI 10389-2 standard, published in April 2022, defines the procedures for combustion analysis, draft measurement, and fuel moisture determination.
This standard introduces new opportunities for the market, as it finally makes it possible to clearly distinguish clean-combustion systems from polluting systems, for which corrective actions or replacement are required.

At present, particulate matter (dust) analysis is not included in the scope of the standard.
For this reason, installers and maintenance technicians of thermal plants must continue to carry out particulate checks based on their own professional experience, the manufacturers’ instructions, or by relying on specialized chemical laboratories.

The UNI 11859-1 standard provides installers and maintenance personnel with the procedures for inspecting existing flue and exhaust systems, in a manner equivalent to UNI 10845 for gas-fired systems.

🔍 Checks Before Installation According to UNI 11859-1

Before installation, the installer must verify the suitability of the chimney, for example by applying the requirements of the UNI 11859-1 standard.

The following checks shall be carried out:

Verification of the presence of any ventilation opening, ensuring it is free from obstructions

General inspection of the chimney

Verification of the tightness (seal) test, certified by the chimney installer

Verification of the required safety distances, certified by the chimney installer

👁️ Visual inspection

Materials used and their compatibility with the installation site

Installation criteria for the flue duct, chimney, and any collector

Chimney terminals and outlet heights

Internal and external condition of the chimney, for example through video inspection using a rotating-head camera compliant with UNI 10847

📌 Installer responsibility

For chimneys without previous inspections, certifications, or identification plates, the installer is responsible for their certification.

🔧 Checks After Installation or Maintenance

After the installation of the generator and at each maintenance intervention, the combustion process of the generator must be checked and adjusted in order to prevent environmental pollution.

Checks for manually loaded domestic generators, such as fireplaces, stoves, or wood-burning inserts, include:

Inspection of wood quality, verifying type, weight, and size in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions

Fuel moisture content measurement in accordance with UNI 10389-2

Draft measurement in accordance with UNI 10389-2

Measurement of flue gas temperature

Verification of an adequate combustion air supply, for example by means of the 4-Pa test

Verification of smoke backflow in accordance with UNI 11859-1

Verification of the tightness of the coaxial exhaust system in accordance with UNI 11859-1
