What are the current regulations for exhaust fumes, odors on the wall
In Italy, the current regulations for smoke and odor discharge on walls are contained in the following regulatory framework:
- DPR 412/1993, amended by D.Lgs n. 102 of 2014, which governs the design, installation, and maintenance of heating systems.
- UNI 7129:2015, which establishes the requirements for the installation of kitchen hoods.
- UNI 10683:2017, which establishes the requirements for the design and installation of chimneys.
In particular, Article 5, paragraph 9, of DPR 412/1993, states that "The discharge of combustion products must occur on the roof: direct discharge on the wall or towards closed spaces, even open-air, is prohibited".
However, paragraph 9 bis of the same article provides some exceptions to this rule, allowing wall discharge in specific cases, including:
- Systems installed before August 31, 2013: in this case, wall discharge is allowed if the system is still in use and if it is not possible or excessively burdensome to replace it with a roof system.
- Systems with a power of less than 35 kW: in this case, wall discharge is allowed if the system is installed in a single-family home or an independent housing unit.
- Systems with a power between 35 and 70 kW: in this case, wall discharge is allowed if the system is installed in a condominium and if a device for checking the airtightness of the discharge duct is provided.
In all cases where wall discharge is allowed, the following requirements must be met:
- The discharge duct must be made of non-combustible material and must have a section not less than 150 cm².
- The discharge duct must be equipped with a device for checking airtightness.
- The discharge duct must be installed to prevent water infiltration.
Furthermore, it is necessary to obtain authorization from the Municipality before installing a system with wall discharge.
In conclusion, the current regulations for smoke and odor discharge on walls are very restrictive, and this type of discharge is allowed only in specific cases and only if the prescribed requirements are met.
